But it was in 1981 that National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of USA took the initiative of standardizing VIN Numbers. So every vehicle is required to have a win number. A VIN number consist of 17 characters but one thing must be kept in mind that these 17 characters should not contain the English alphabets I,O,Q as they can be confused with 1 and 0.
VIN numbers became very important as they can help you in checking whether the car you are buying is a lemon or not.A lemon car is that which has several defects, but the owners realizes these defects only after buying it. The first three characters of the 17 worded VIN number represent the manufacturer of the vehicle. A manufacturer is identified by WMI code ( World Manufacture Identifier) code. Any manufacturer who manufactures less than 500 vehicles per year uses nine as the third digit in the VIN number.
The fourth to Ninth positions in the VIN are known as VDS (Vehicle Descriptor Section)
The 10 to 17 th characters gives an idea about the VIS(Vehicle Identifier Section).
